District Approves Calendar for 2026-2027 School Year
At the Jan. 6 Board of Education meeting, EUFSD Trustees finalized the framework for the 2026-27 school calendar, voting to approve the proposed school calendar for next year.

The calendar will see students return for the first day of school on September 2, with the last day of classes scheduled for June 25, 2027. The approved schedule ensures that the district will meet the standards set forth by the New York State Education Department, with students attending school for 181* days.
Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Technology Robert Jacoby led the group tasked with putting this calendar together, and noted that the process needed to account for a few unique challenges, including a late Labor Day (Sept. 7) and a near-month separating Easter (March 28) the first night of Passover (April 21).
“We usually start the school year after Labor Day, but with it being so late this year, if we did that, we would really have to crunch everything in and cut our breaks short,” said Jacoby. “The second factor is that we are usually able to schedule Spring Break so that it covers both holidays, something that we weren’t able to do in 2026-2027.”
Administrators strove to find a way to thread that needle, using the flexibility provided by the pre-Labor Day start date to add two off-days on April 21 and 22 that coincide with Passover.
“It was just one of the many discussions that went into the crafting of the calendar,” added Jacoby.
“First of all, we’re thinking about the state requirements, both instructional days and instructional hours, which means 900 hours for K-6 students and 990 for students in Grades 7-12, which we definitely hit in this calendar,” he said. “Then we take into account the contracts for all of our employee bargaining units. We also want to make sure that the schedule is consistent for our students and provides for an instructional schedule that is as uninterrupted as possible.”
Jacoby feels that with the framework now in place, families and staff will have a better idea of what the next 17 months will look like, a picture that will become even clearer after the detailed calendar—featuring dates for Homecoming, Prom, and other events—is finalized later this year. Beyond that, he says, it will provide a head start for certain EUFSD departments, notably Human Resources and Finance—to begin to chart a course for next year operationally.
“I don’t know how many people right now are making vacation plans for next school year, but I think in general, this is helpful in a lot of ways,” said Jacoby. “And it helps us in the district to get ahead in terms of creating payroll and holiday schedules.”
